shea sylvia [blog edition]

These are the everyday adventures of a California Girl in Kansas City (with guest appearances by a boy, two pugs and the world's fattest cat).

Despite recent evidence to the contrary, this is NOT a wedding blog. I swear. Really.

BTW, all opinions posted here are my own.

I went to the Kansas State Fair for the very first time yesterday. While I initially thought it was going to be a disturbing display of rednecks and deep fried twinkies, I actually had a blast. As soon as we saw the animals, I was hooked.

A baby cow that had been born only two hours earlier? Yes, please. Pigs and horses and sheep and goats and the miracle of life everywhere I looked? I’ll have some of that.

I grew up in a bustling suburban area 30 miles outside of San Francisco, did some time in Los Angeles and, when I came to Kansas, moved to the largest city in the state. My livestock experiences have been few and far between. To hear cows mooing and pigs squealing was a totally new experience and I loved it.

Between the animals and the fried cheese curds, the locally brewed beer and the funnel cake (and the ensuing stomach pains), we rode the ferris wheel, saw how cows are milked, and contemplated checking out the hot wings eating competition.

And as we strolled back to the car to the awesome vocal stylings of none other than Saturday night’s headliner, Heart, performing their timeless hit “What About Love,” I was actually kind of sad to leave.

Kansas State Fair, I’ll see you next year…
